Dokkaebi as a Collective Portrait
of Workshop Participants
(2024)

This project suggest a new narrative of the human body in a speculative world based on Korean futurism. Dokkaebi are supernatural spirits in Korea characterised by chaos and ambiguity itself. Moving with the forces of nature they are able to assume any form. In this speculative world, the human body evolves into Dokkaebi and gets an unstable, unclear, and cloudy form of the body. Through this, they raise questions about the authenticity of the human body and all categories surrounding it.

  • It was chaos ---

A flicker of all things possible,

    Or no thing at all.

  • Countless replications,

    Ceaseless divisions,

    An onward surge of life.

  • A name is bestowed, a body is claimed.

    Chaos is no longer chaos.

Bound by names cast over the world.

Flounder and lost among a sea of names.

  • In a hush of thought,

fingers brush the web of names ---

    A fragile fortress cracks.

    Were these words ever real,

Or just the walls we made?

  • Under the touch, names become soften, warm, pliant.

    No longer names at all.

Just empty letters drifting beyond meaning.

Homo Dokkaebi

Countless replications,

Ceaseless divisions,

An onward surge of life.

It was chaos ---

A flicker of all things possible,

Or no thing at all.

A name is bestowed, a body is claimed.

Chaos is no longer chaos.

Bound by names cast over the world.

Flounder and lost among a sea of names.

In a hush of thought,

fingers brush the web of names ---

A fragile fortress cracks.

Were these words ever real,

Or just the walls we made?

Under the touch, names become soften, warm, pliant.

No longer names at all.

Just empty letters drifting beyond meaning.
