Speculative Design Projects

The Snail Body project explores alternative post-bodies beyond binary frameworks, using hermaphroditic organisms like snails as a metaphor for inclusivity and fluidity. Using Blender, artists designed a post-body within a digital space that celebrates diversity and interaction. It challenges traditional concepts of the body and explores how digital and physical identities can intersect and evolve.

Watercolour sketches provided the groundwork for 3D modelling, demonstrating how physical exploration can transition into virtual design and bridging the gap between the physical and digital.
Before developing the post-body design, artist explored the characteristics and symbolic meanings of different hermaphroditic animals.

Among the various animals studied, snails were chosen for their unique reproductive behaviours and dual-gender characteristics, which offered powerful symbolism for a post body design. Snails, beyond being biologically hermaphroditic, constantly exchange roles in their interactions, embody fluidity and inclusivity, making them an ideal model for transcending traditional gender binaries.
